Queens Park Mackay
The revitalisation of Queens Park is the first project to be completed as part of the Mackay Waterfront Priority Development Area. The $8.8 million state-funded endeavour aims to provide the local community with major park upgrade to both infrastructure and landscaping.
On the softscape front, an exhaustive tropical planting palette was installed to various areas of Queens park along with a stylish signature labyrinth. In total, an impressive 15,750 m2 of green couch was laid to deliver on the landscape architect’s vision of openness and vast green spaces. A key feature of our scope also involved the design and construction of a fully remote-controlled irrigation system. This allows the client to schedule irrigation to specific sections of the site and maximize fast results while eliminating water-wastage.
Challenges comprised a tight timeframe, site limitations to stock-pile material and busy programing with other trades. Limited local plant stock prompted the need to source some species from all across Queensland including Yeppoon, Cairns and as far as Darwin. Flying and organizing accommodation during the pandemic proved to be another logistical difficulty that we successfully overcame.
Overall, the Queens park revitalisation constitutes another great opportunity for Penfold Projects to showcase our capabilities in a remote location setting. We are grateful for the valuable contributions and support of Globe Labour Hire and Bluesky Nursery, amongst many other suppliers ,who were a determining factor in the completion of this project.
