PA Hospital Atrium Garden
Penfold Projects was engaged to turn Brisbane’s PA Hospital’s existing central non-functional ‘water court’ into two open functional spaces for both the public and hospital staff to enjoy.
The PA Hospital Atrium Garden design criteria was to create a space that promotes sustainability, being mindful of material re-use, existing infrastructure and access, and planting palettes.
The two outdoor spaces were divided by tall planters with feature shade trees, and structural privacy screen planting. The existing blue stone was reused in the construction of the planter boxes and feature gabion cages. This stonework created a semi-formal structure and opportunity for seating, while the colourful tropical planting contrasts against the stone to enhance the relaxed tropical environment. Existing drainage points were reused for irrigation within the atrium.
The PA Hospital Altrium Garden was the winner of the Commercial 3 category at the Landscape Queensland Awards 2010.
